Building a liberatory future for people and our planet.

As we enter the fall months and another year comes to an end, we are reminded more than ever that change is not only possible but essential. In a world facing ongoing genocide, economic disparities, climate catastrophe, and racial injustices, we stand at a pivotal moment for continued resistance. This season, we acknowledge the harm that persists around us, and we also celebrate the strength and resilience within our community. In this edition of our newsletter, we’ll highlight our collective efforts toward building a liberatory future and offer potential opportunities for your involvement in this work to better care for people and our planet.

Building a Regional Ecosystem: Introducing the Solidarity Economy Incubator!

The Solidarity Economy Incubator (SEI) is a 2-year cohort that will consist of (up to) five projects from across Massachusetts. Members of the cohort will build liberatory projects that promote a regenerative economy based on care, cooperation, community control and ecological/social well-being.

CED is now accepting applications from groups including non-profit organization’s projects, fiscally sponsored projects, or other formations trying to launch or grow projects in the solidarity economy and that are past ideation phase. Project examples include community land trusts, housing cooperatives, local community loan funds, mutual aid structures and so on. This space is for groups whose projects would benefit from connection to TA support, thought partnership, education, and peer support from other values-aligned people and projects.

For more information, refer to this two-page flier. Reach out to eliza@economicdemocracy.us if you have any questions.

Applications are due December 6th. If interested in applying, use the button below.

Calling all Boston Residents: Express your support for the Community Movement Commons!

In early 2023, CED purchased land in Roxbury together with our partners to build a place that many of us have dreamed of for years. Community Movement Commons, a space dedicated to bringing people together will house Boston’s first birth center, free community gathering spaces, and shared and affordable rentable offices for non-profits.

This project represents a long-term vision for a permanent hub for social justice organizing, care work, and community gathering right here in Roxbury. The project is currently co-owned and governed by Resist, Movement Sustainability Commons, the Neighborhood Birth Center, Matahari Women Worker’s Center and Sisters Unchained.

A public meeting is happening on Wednesday, October 2 at 7pm to hear neighborhood reactions to the proposed project. We need YOUR help, especially if you are a Roxbury resident, to join the zoom meeting and share why you are excited about this project. If the city does not hear majority support, the project may not be able to move forward.

If you are unable to attend the meeting but want to share your support in the project moving forward, please sign the petition at the button below.

Contact Eliza at eliza@economicdemocracy.us if you are interested in learning more about how to support the project.

Worker Ownership Rising: COWOP at the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives Conference!

The Coalition for Worker Ownership and Power (COWOP) made a strong impact at the USFWC conference, held September 12-14 at the Chicago Teachers’ Union, an organization with a long history of bargaining for the common good, winning on issues such as childcare access for all.

COWOP representatives Iolando Spinola (Brockton Interfaith Community), Erin Burrows (Samara Collective), Chuck Boardman (Coop Matters), Wren Ribiero (Inner Fortune and COWOP MassCEO Advisory Board Seat Holder), and Sarah Assefa (CED) participated in a state coalition info-sharing session with coalition members from California, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington, and beyond.

COWOP Organizer Sarah Assefa also spoke on a panel moderated by USFWC Executive Director Esteban Kelly, to discuss Building Worker Power Across Solidarity Economy Movements alongside speakers from the Pilipino Workers’ Center, New Economy Coalition, and Kitty’s Laundrette co-op.

Cooperatives continue to be essential for Black liberation, immigrant prosperity, and social justice. With more participants than ever before, the USFWC conference highlighted the growth of cooperatives across the U.S. and new policies advancing from the state to federal level, making the future of the cooperative movement bright.

Learn more about the conference highlights at the COWOP coalition gathering on the first Monday of October at 3:30 p.m. Email sarah.a@economicdemocracy.us for the meeting link to join!
